From 1810 to 1901 a distillery operated on the small Isle of Jura before being closed and dismantled. The current distillery is a completely new premises built in 1963 to boost the local economy. Somewhat over shadowed by its near neighbours on the Isle of Islay, the distillery on Jura didn’t exactly set the world of whisky alight with exciting spirit.
In recent years however some more interesting expressions have emerged and the owners, Whyte and Mackay, are clearly pushing the brand with some rather expensive looking and very beautiful packaging. Fans of peaty whisky should look out for the younger more heavily peated bottlings such as Isle of Jura Prophecy.
