Originally built in 1898 to provide malt whisky for Teacher's blended Scotch, Ardmore remains closely tied to that famous blend and continues to be one of the key peated malts of the Highlands. The distillery was founded by the Teacher family near Kennethmont in Aberdeenshire and, although much of its production still supports Teacher's, Ardmore has increasingly gained recognition in its own right as a single malt. Today it operates within Suntory Global Spirits, the successor to Beam Suntory.

Peated whisky is too often considered the exclusive domain of Islay alone, but Ardmore serves as an excellent reminder that peat has long had a place in Highland whisky too. Its house style combines earthy smoke with a more restrained fruitiness and malty sweetness than is often found in the more medicinal styles of Islay. That balance has made Ardmore a particularly attractive introduction to peated whisky for many drinkers, while still providing enough character to satisfy more experienced enthusiasts.

Earlier official releases such as Traditional Cask helped establish the distillery's modern reputation, pairing Highland peat with maturation in bourbon casks and a finishing period in quarter casks. More recent core bottlings, including Ardmore Legacy, have continued to showcase the distillery in an accessible and approachable style, while older official releases and a substantial number of independent bottlings have demonstrated that Ardmore's spirit can develop considerable depth and complexity with age.
