The legal classifications of Scotch whisky can seem confusing to newcomers, especially because terms like Blended Malt Scotch Whisky, Blended Scotch Whisky and Blended Grain Scotch Whisky sound deceptively similar. In practice, however, the distinctions are straightforward once you understand that the labels describe both the type of whisky involved and whether it comes from one distillery or multiple distilleries. Under current law, Scotch whisky is divided into five recognized categories, of which Blended Grain Scotch Whisky is one.

Simply put, Blended Grain Scotch Whisky is grain whisky - that is to say whisky made from grain other than malted barley - that has been distilled at a number of different Scottish distilleries. It has then been matured for no less than three years in casks stored in Scotland and bottled at a minimum strength of 40% ABV.
