Glen Spey is a Speyside single malt distillery in Rothes, one of Scotland's most densely packed whisky towns. Founded in 1878 by James Stuart as Mill of Rothes, it was soon converted from its earlier milling origins into a working distillery and later took on the Glen Spey name under W. & A. Gilbey.
Today Glen Spey is owned by Diageo and remains far better known within blending than as a widely promoted single malt. Its whisky has long been associated with J&B, where its light, nutty, and gently textured character plays a supporting role. Official single malt bottlings are limited, with the 12 Year Old in Diageo's Flora & Fauna range the best-known expression, while independent releases give a broader view of the spirit at different ages and cask styles.
The distillery's spirit is often described as light but not thin, helped by purifier pipes that encourage a slightly oily texture. Typical notes include apple, pear, citrus peel, malt, almond, soft spice, and gentle grassiness, with older or richer cask-influenced bottlings adding vanilla, honey, toasted nuts, and polished oak.
Glen Spey is a quiet example of how much subtlety can sit inside Scotland's blending stocks. It may not have the profile of its Rothes neighbors, but when bottled as a single malt it shows a delicate, nutty Speyside character with more texture and charm than its understated reputation suggests.
