Littlemill is a lost Lowland single malt distillery from Bowling, West Dunbartonshire, with a history that has been linked to distilling on the site as far back as the eighteenth century. Often discussed as one of Scotland's oldest licensed distillery names, it occupied an unusual position near the Highland–Lowland boundary, though its whisky is generally regarded as Lowland in style.
The distillery closed in 1994, was dismantled in the late 1990s, and the remaining buildings were later destroyed by fire. Today the Littlemill name and remaining casks are held by Loch Lomond Group, which has released rare official bottlings from the last stocks under the oversight of its whisky team. With no active distillery remaining, every genuine Littlemill release is necessarily finite.
Littlemill's spirit was shaped by an unconventional production setup, including stills fitted with rectifying columns, allowing a degree of control over the style of spirit produced. Surviving bottlings often show a delicate but expressive profile, with citrus, vanilla, honey, soft orchard fruit, grass, spice and, in older expressions, tropical fruit, polished oak, and waxy complexity.
Littlemill now belongs to the rarer world of closed distilleries whose reputation has grown after production ended. Its best bottlings offer more than historical interest: they capture a distinctive Lowland character from a site that can never be recreated in quite the same way.
