Royal Lochnagar is a Highland single malt distillery near Balmoral, on the edge of the Cairngorms. Founded in the nineteenth century by John Begg, it became closely linked with the royal estate after Queen Victoria and Prince Albert visited in 1848, a connection that led to its royal warrant and the name by which it is known today.
The distillery is owned by Diageo and remains one of the smaller, more characterful sites in its portfolio. Although some of its whisky contributes to blends, Royal Lochnagar has a clear single malt identity, led by the 12 Year Old and supported by Distillers Edition bottlings, limited releases and occasional older expressions.
The style is refined, gently fruity and lightly spicy, with notes of apple, citrus, honey, malt, vanilla, soft oak and dried fruit. Sherry and wine-cask influence can add more richness, bringing orange peel, nuts, polished wood and a delicate sweetness without overwhelming the whisky's Highland character.
Royal Lochnagar is shaped as much by setting and history as by scale. It is not a loud or heavily peated Highland malt, but a graceful, traditional whisky whose best expressions offer poise, freshness and quiet depth close to one of Scotland's most famous royal landscapes.
