Tamdhu Whisky

Tamdhu is a Speyside single malt distillery on the banks of the River Spey, founded in 1897 during the great late-Victorian whisky boom. Designed with efficiency in mind by renowned distillery architect Charles Doig, it became a respected producer of malt whisky for blending before developing a much stronger identity as a single malt in its own right.

The distillery is now owned by Ian Macleod Distillers, which acquired Tamdhu after a period of closure and restarted production in 2013. Under its current ownership, Tamdhu has become closely associated with sherry cask maturation, with a core range that includes age-stated expressions such as the 12, 15 and 18 Year Old, alongside Batch Strength releases and older limited editions.

Tamdhu's style is rich, polished and fruit-forward, with notes of dried fruit, orange peel, vanilla, baking spice, dark chocolate and toasted oak. The use of Oloroso sherry-seasoned casks, often from both European and American oak, gives the whisky much of its color, depth and rounded sweetness, while the underlying Speyside spirit keeps the profile balanced rather than heavy.

For drinkers who enjoy sherried Speyside whisky, Tamdhu is a particularly clear and confident example. It combines traditional regional elegance with a deep cask influence, offering a style that feels generous, structured and distinctly shaped by its modern revival.
