White Horse Whisky

White Horse is a historic blended Scotch whisky with roots in Edinburgh and strong associations with the Mackie family, whose whisky interests included Lagavulin on Islay. The brand takes its name from the White Horse Cellar, a well-known coaching inn in Edinburgh's Canongate, and became one of the classic export blends of the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Today White Horse is owned by Diageo. Although it is no longer as prominent in the UK as some other blended Scotch names, it continues to be sold in a number of international markets and retains an important place in Scotch whisky history. Its traditional recipe is particularly associated with Lagavulin, whose smoky Islay malt has long helped give the blend a more characterful edge.

The style is generally fuller and smokier than many easy-drinking blends, combining grain whisky sweetness with notes of malt, vanilla, honey, toasted cereal, gentle spice, and a thread of peat smoke. Depending on the bottling and market, White Horse can feel robust and old-fashioned, with enough weight to work neat, over ice, or in simple whisky highballs.

White Horse stands out as a blend with genuine historical depth and a more distinctive flavor profile than its modest modern visibility might suggest. It is a reminder of a period when Scotch blends carried strong house characters, often shaped by close links to individual malt distilleries.
