Coleburn Whisky

Coleburn is a Speyside single malt distillery near Longmorn, south of Elgin, founded in 1897 by John Robertson & Son. Built during the late-Victorian whisky boom, it was designed primarily to supply malt whisky for blending rather than to become a widely promoted single malt in its own right.

The distillery was mothballed in 1985 and later passed through the ownership trail that led into Diageo, before the site was sold in the 2000s. In recent years Coleburn has moved from lost-distillery status toward revival, with plans announced to reopen the site as The Distillery at Coleburn, including new production and visitor facilities. Until new spirit has been distilled and matured, however, historic Coleburn whisky remains drawn from finite old stocks.

Surviving bottlings are rare and typically come from independent bottlers or older official releases. The whisky is generally associated with a gentle Speyside profile, showing malt, honey, orchard fruit, citrus, vanilla, and soft spice, with mature examples developing wax, polished oak, dried fruit, and a delicate, slightly old-fashioned texture.

Coleburn's story now sits between scarcity and renewal. Its remaining old bottlings preserve the character of a quiet blending malt from another era, while the planned revival gives the name a future that few closed Speyside distilleries ever receive.
